Richard Nell's Kings of Paradise is a really good grimdark fantasy ala Game of Thrones. ASoIaF is in historical fantasy genre - fantasy with more realistic approach to the world and politics. First historical fantasy was Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz, they were written as several trilogies, each with complete story.
